REAR BAR-PIN ELIMINATOR

A "how-to" using old take off parts and
$2.00 in hardware

Why spend the money if you already have the parts right?

This quick mod will get rid of those pesky Bar-pins and turn your upper shock mount into a conventional "EB1" eyelet mount. If you lifted your XJ, odds are you removed the rear sway bar. You will need the two Sway bar link brackets you took off of your U-bolt plate. You will also need two of the following. 1/2"x2.5" bolts, nuts and lock washer. this takes about hlaf an hour to do.

This project will give you another 1" more of shock travel.

Remove your old shocks completely. It should be 2 bolts each using a 1/2" socket on top and a 15MM socket for the lower nut. Here is what the bar-pin looks like.

The easiest way to remove the bar-pin is put it in a vise as shown. one jaw on the pin and the other on the eyelet housing. I used some lube to help it push out.

This makes life a lot easier and then you can just wiggle the bar-pin out the rest of the way. Be careful not to completely tighten the vise or you may cause damage to the eyelet.

One removed bar-pin for the scrap bin.

Now you will have a regular "EB1" shock mount.

Just about every shock i have ever purchased has had a bag of bushing sleeves. I found mine. if not you can find these at a hardware store. I found a 1/2" bolt to fit perfect, no slop. you dont want the bolt to be loose in there, otherwise you are creating slop and will hear and possibly feel it going down the road.

Check bracket for fit. I had to spread the ears a bit .

Simply slide shock end into new bracket and install the bolt. I used a 1/2"x2.5" bolt with a lock washer and nut. I recommend that you install the bracket while its out of the Jeep. I tried it the other way and found it impossible to do.

  One complete Bar-pin eliminator.

Reinstall the new upper with the original bolts. The holes the bolts go through were to large so i just grabbed some washers i had laying around and that fixed the problem.

  Another angle of the mount

Now, when I decide to purchase shocks for the rear I have a much larger choice of shocks and I wont get that knocking sound when the barpin and bushing where out.

Credit goes over to Dave O of the Arizona XJs. He is the one that told me about this quick little mod.
