So this all starts out when I am on break at work and surfing craigslist. I usually just type in "Jeep" and let it go. I am just about to get back to work and saw "2001 Jeep Cherokee motor $50" I thought nothing of it and quickly found out its a complete motor top to bottom left to right Fuel injection and accessories.

Now I have the perfect spare 4.0 for a rebuild. Then I thought, "what if I turned it into a stroker?" So searching the Jeep forums lead me to the second deal of the month. In a quick move on a sunny Sunday morning, I drove from Phoenix to Kingman, AZ to pick up the next purchase. This one was $300 for a 1991 4.0 with rebuild extras still in there boxes ready to be installed. Turns out this guy was planning on a stroker build as well. For what ever reason he passed on the idea and I scored the parts as you will see in the list below. His parts list matched mine by like 80%. There are still a few things i need but this idea spun out of control and may actually happen this year.

The block still needs to go in for machining. I hope the cylinders get 30 over because I can use the pistons i have.

I plan to have the shop just go over the head and check it. I will then take it back and do a mild port and polishing on the runners and smooth up the chambers.

I am still needing to find out if i need to have the pistons dished to bring down my compression. I need this to run on 87 octane pump gas.

Acquiring The Parts

2001 complete engine with a hole in #5 piston.

Cost: $50.00

I could not wait to get the engine stand. Stripped most of it down right there on the trailer.

You can see how bad #5 cylinder was. I trade the head to a friend and verified the head is in fact still good so he can use it on his project.

Looks like I got lucky and when #5 went it only took itself out and nothing else. The crank and more importanly the block look to be ok. I wont know for sure until the block goes in for magnaflux.

The second purchase. 1991 HO block and most of its parts to make a whole engine.

Most of the items in parts list at the top of the page is sitting here in the next set of pictures. This is what I drove 8hour for.

As you can see everything is still in their boxes.

1992 #7120 casting head. Reworked from ATK and has around 10K miles on it. The picture shows how clean and low mileage it really is.

Another shot of the head. No this has not come back from shop or been cleaned. All I did was wipe it down to get rid of some of the dust build up. The head is that new.

The left over parts from the second purchase (mainly the engine) I traded to another friend for this 258 crankshaft. He had plans to build a stroker and then passed. He got my left overs and I ended up with the exact crank I was looking for. all re done by BMI. its #3127 87-90 4CW crank. Mains are .010" and the Rods are .020"

Update 1-27-2010

Removed the 4.0 crank

A shot of #5 connecting rod bearing journal. There is nothing to indicate a failure

A close up detailed shot of #5 cylinder

Toip side of stripped block

Bottom side of stripped block. Nothing to show any damage elsewhere on or in the block besides the cylinder

Parts, parts and more parts.

I hope to have the block and head sent off to BMI for cleaning and checking. I will then get them back and site while I build up the rest of the parts list and some cash.

2-20-2011
Update: Nothing yet. Due to a unforseen Economic downturn The stroker is currently in a holding pattern somewhere above my head!
